RECIPE FOR COLD-PORCELAIN STYLE CLAY: (Used by Marlene for the November Thanksgiving project food) – mashed potatoes, butter & gravy. May also be used for dressing/stuffing by adding minced herbs, etc.
Mix together 1 cup baking soda, ½ cup cornstarch, and 2/3 cup water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture holds together and somewhat resembles mashed potatoes. Remove mixture from the pan and place on a breadboard or other suitable kneading surface. When it is cool enough to handle, knead in 3 tablespoons of white, tacky type glue, 1 teaspoon white acrylic paint, either several drops of bleach or oil of clove (as a preservative- I used bleach), and then another ½ cup of cornstarch. Knead until smooth. Store in an air-tight bag. Clay will air-dry hard in several hours to overnight, depending on the thickness of the piece. Clay may be tinted by kneading in colored chalk shavings or acrylic or watercolor paints. Sculpted pieces may also be painted after their creation.
